Punched Perforated Metal- Astro Shop Secrets
Shhh… Did You Hear the Rumor?
Astro has added a new machine to our shop- now that’s a secret we can’t keep quite about.
There’s a lot that happens at Astro Metal Craft to create the custom punched perforated metal panels our customers know and love. From engineering and programming to laser cutting and precision punching—every step of our custom metal fabrication process takes skill, creativity, and the right equipment.
We just expanded our machine capabilities by adding the Trumpf TruMatic 1000. This machine serves as a punch and laser combo. Accelerating our precision and efficiency during production.
Check out our lasted shop talk with our manufacturing engineer, Tim Ahrens, to get a behind the scenes look at Astro’s capabilities, punching parameters and R&D!
More Than Just a Punch Machine
A punch machine is a powerful tool, but it’s only as effective as the team behind it. At Astro, our manufacturing engineers handle much more than simply loading material. They program the equipment, design tooling, set up production orders, train operators, and ensure every project meets our high standards of accuracy and quality.
This level of expertise allows us to achieve complex designs and tight tolerances—hallmarks of true custom metal fabrication.
Design Rules for Punched Perforated Metal Success
When designing parts for a punch machine, there are two essential rules to follow:
- Hole Size Rule: A hole should never be smaller than the material thickness. Smaller holes increase the risk of tool damage and poor part quality.
- Webbing Rule: The web (or space) between holes should not be smaller than the material thickness. Too little spacing can cause twisting, warping, or distortion.
Following these guidelines ensures consistent results, flat parts, and efficient production—key elements of successful custom metal fabrication.
How Small Changes Make a Big Difference
Changing a single variable—such as switching from aluminum to steel, or increasing material thickness—can significantly impact the process. Tool clearances, cutting parameters, and material behavior all shift.
These small adjustments may require new tooling or even a design revision to maintain precision and prevent tool wear or part deformation. That’s why careful planning and experience are critical in every metal fabrication project.
What Sets Astro Apart in Punched Perforated Metal
While many shops offer punching services, Astro stands out for its collaborative and solutions-driven approach. Our team works directly with estimators, sales, and customers to align design vision with manufacturing reality.
We design and build custom tooling, run R&D tests, and create specialized solutions when standard tools don’t exist. This innovation-first mindset allows us to take on complex, one-of-a-kind projects that other fabricators can’t.
That’s the Astro advantage—precision, partnership, and performance.
Introducing the Trumatic 1000: Our Next-Gen Punch Machine
Astro’s latest investment, the Trumatic 1000, brings next-level capability to our shop. This hybrid punch machine combines electric punching with fiber laser cutting, allowing us to perform both operations in a single setup.
The result? Faster production, reduced handling, and superior edge quality. Complex border shapes and detailed features that once required multiple machines can now be produced in one streamlined process.
This machine expands what’s possible in custom metal fabrication, giving our customers cleaner finishes and faster turnaround times.
The Final Punch
Astro works closely with architects and engineers to transform creative ideas into manufacturable designs. Understanding the basics of punching—like material limits and spacing rules—early in the design process can prevent costly revisions and ensure fabrication success.
A little bit of manufacturing awareness goes a long way toward creating beautiful, functional, and feasible designs.
The next time you see a perfectly punched perforated metal panel or façade, remember: behind every clean edge and crisp pattern is a dedicated team, the right punch machine, and a passion for doing things right.
