Perforated Metal Fence

For those looking for a unique, robust, and maintenance-free fence, a Perforated Metal Fence could be the perfect choice!   Our first experience in fabricating an aluminum perforated metal fence came in about 2014, when we were awarded the project on an open bid platform.  That one was designed by an architect for a Park ‘n Ride facility. Since that time, we have completed other projects with various designs for perforated fences.  With the success of these projects, this fence is now a part of our product line: StellarCraft.  BIM models and specifications are available to architects and designers here.

APPLICATIONS

With the robustness of these fences, public and commercial sites are the most appropriate.  However, any homeowner desiring a maintenance-free, durable, and stylish fence, perforated aluminum won’t disappoint.   Perforated metal fences are used for creating a visual screen, a physical barrier, fall protection, or airflow reduction.  Popular at Sports venues, Parks, Zoos, Education facilities, or any public site, perforated metal fences do their job in style and performance.  There is no end to the variety in perforation patterns that are achievable to create a lasting and beautiful fence.

MATERIALS

Aluminum comes out on top for the metal of choice for perforated fences.  To keep it clean and free of corrosion, a coating of either a good paint, (a high-performance organic coating for best warrantee) or anodizing, are both great options.

Another good choice when the design warrants the use, is weathering steel.  It’s lower cost than aluminum, and a great option when the rusty (or rustic) look is wanted.  This type of steel rusts naturally over the first months after installation.  It’s the copper and nickel content of this type of steel that arrests the rusting process after a thin coat appears on the surface.   To learn more about weathering steel, see our blog.

We don’t recommend using plain carbon steel with paint for outdoor perforated metals due to possible rusting on the interiors of the perforations and exhibiting rust runs on the fence.  No one wants to see that.

Stainless steel certainly yields a product that is virtually unmatched for hardness, durability, and low corrosivity.  We love working with stainless and do a lot of it in other products.  It comes with a higher price, but certain situations may warrant that cost.

TYPES

For mounting, there are two choices.  If on an existing concrete surface, the posts are made with baseplates and then mounted with large screws and adhesive.  For fences installed in bare ground, the posts must be installed in a concrete base for a sturdy hold. The panels are then screwed onto the posts at the jobsite.

For details of fence construction, we work with the designer to be able to support the needs of the customer on height, post spacing, material type and gauge, and perforation patterns.  A standard maximum height is 7 feet and the maximum recommended post spacing is 5 feet. Regarding the perforation pattern, there are some guidelines on hole size, distance between holes, and material thickness to consider.  There are details of these parameters on our page Perforated Metal Screens.  We can provide samples of perforation patterns when desired.

Be sure to give us a shout out (call or email) if you would like to further consider a Perforated Metal Fence for your project!  We’d love to help you get started or just answer any questions you may have.
