Purge Welding Explained: Why Protecting Internal Welds Matter
Whether a piping system carries water, process fluids, or sanitary products, the condition of the weld on the inside of the pipe is just as important as the finished weld on the exterior.
One of the most effective ways to ensure long-term weld integrity is through purge welding.
What Is Purge Welding?
Purge welding is a process used primarily when welding stainless steel pipe and tubing together. Purging removes oxygen from the inside of the pipe to produce a clean, fully penetrated weld. Oxygen must be eliminated from the weld area to prevent oxidation, commonly referred to as “sugaring” or “crystallization,” on the backside of the weld.
The process begins by sealing both ends of the pipe. Argon gas is then introduced into the pipe, displacing the oxygen inside. Since argon is denser than oxygen, it pushes the oxygen upward and out through small vent holes in the opposite end of the sealed pipe. Once the oxygen level has been reduced to an acceptable level, welding can begin, resulting in a clean, corrosion-resistant weld with a smooth internal surface.
Why Oxidation Is a Problem
Oxidation is more than a cosmetic issue. Oxidation on the inside of a weld can:
- Reduce the corrosion resistance of stainless steel
- Create rough surfaces that trap contaminants
- Increase the likelihood of future corrosion
- Weaken the overall integrity of the weld
- Shorten the service life of the welded system
For systems expected to operate reliably for decades, preventing internal oxidation is essential. A properly purged weld helps ensure the inside of the joint remains as strong and corrosion-resistant as the outside.

Verifying Quality Purge Welding
In applications where internal weld quality is critical, visual confirmation doesn’t stop at the exterior.
A borescope can be inserted into the pipe to inspect the weld. This inspection verifies:
- Complete penetration
- Clean internal weld profile
- Absence of sugaring
- Consistent weld quality throughout the joint
This added level of inspection provides confidence that the finished weld meets project specifications before the piping system is placed into service.
