Aluminum Fabrication Services

Custom aluminum fabrication services involve cutting, forming, machining, welding, finishing, and assembling aluminum to produce components and structures for industrial applications. The fabrication process depends on the aluminum alloy, temper, material thickness, design requirements, tolerances, and intended application.

Aluminum is often selected for fabrication because it combines a high strength-to-weight ratio with corrosion resistance, machinability, and thermal and electrical conductivity. At roughly one-third the density of steel, aluminum can provide significant weight savings while maintaining the performance required for many industrial applications.

Custom Aluminum Fabrication Services

We provide custom aluminum fabrication services for industrial components, equipment, structures, and assemblies. Projects can begin with customer-supplied drawings or be developed by our internal drafting team. When drafting our team can assist with project specific fabrication considerations such as material selection, cutting, forming, machining, welding, finishing, and assembly requirements.

Aluminum Cutting: Aluminum sheet, plate, tube, pipes etc. can be cut using Astro’s laser cutting, sawing, shearing, or other CNC cutting methods.

Aluminum Forming and Bending: Press brake and other forming processes create bends, channels, brackets, and custom geometries. Alloy, temper, thickness, bend radius, and geometry are considered to prevent cracking and distortion.

Aluminum Machining: CNC machining produces precise holes, slots, threads, milled features, and tight-tolerance components. Machining requirements are coordinated with the overall fabrication sequence for accuracy and efficiency.

Aluminum Welding: Aluminum welding requires material-specific practices because of its thermal conductivity, oxide layer, and sensitivity to heat. Our team considers alloy and temper, thickness, joint configuration, welding parameters, surface preparation, and required weld appearance to produce consistent structural and cosmetic welds.

Aluminum Finishing and Surface Preparation: Aluminum naturally forms a corrosion-resistant oxide layer, but additional finishing may be required for appearance and durability. Cutting, welding, grinding, and handling can affect the surface, so finish and preparation requirements are established before fabrication.

Common Types of Aluminum Alloys We Fabricate

Aluminum fabrication requirements vary significantly by alloy and temper. Common fabrication alloys include 5052 and 6061, each of which has different characteristics related to strength, formability, machinability, and welding.

5052 aluminum is commonly used for fabricated sheet metal components because of its corrosion resistance and good formability and weldability.

6061 aluminum is commonly used for structural components, machined parts, and fabricated assemblies where higher strength and machinability are important.
